Occupational Therapy

Paediatric Occupational Therapy aims to improve a child’s performance in daily living activities, encompassing self care, play/leisure and learning.

Children may be referred to Paediatric Occupational Therapy for difficulties with:
• Fine motor skills
• - The small, dexterous movements of hands. Including drawing, handwriting, cutting with scissors, manipulating small items such as beads, buttons etc.
• Gross Motor Skills- Large whole body movements including ball skills, balance, co-ordination of movement etc.
• Sensory Integration- Processing of sensory inputs such as noise, movement, touch, taste, smell, vision. Difficulties processing and regulating sensory input may result in high or low activity levels, sensitivity to sensations, inattention, disorganised behaviour, poor co-ordination and reduced self esteem or self control.
• Visual Perceptual skills- The ability to understand visual information. Including matching, discriminating between letters and shapes, puzzles etc.
• Self care skills- Activities of daily living including dressing, hygiene, eating skills eg. use of a knife and fork.
• Play development- appropriate development of play skills including co-operative play, imaginative play etc.

Eligibility Criteria: The Paediatric Occupational Therapy service at Darebin Community Health will provide intervention for children and their families who primarily resides within the City of Darebin, prior to the child’s commencement at school.
Fees: Fees are set as per as per DCH Fees Policy. $8 per consultation for health care or concession card holders $12 per consultation for low income $25 per consultation for middle to high income Arrangements can be made if financial hardship exists.
Referral: A doctor’s referral is not required. Parents/carers, kindergarten teachers, Maternal Child Health Nurses and other health professionals can refer.
How to Make an Appointment: Referrals can be made by phone, letter or fax. All referrals are received and processed by Client Access & Referral Services. Details are Phone: 8470 1111 Fax: 84701107.
Waiting Time: There is a demand for the service and a waiting list applies. Children with more significant and multiple needs may be referred to a more appropriate service such as Specialist Children’s Services or the Royal Children’s Hospital. This may include children with global developmental delay, cerebral palsy, autism etc
Interpreters: Interpreters can be arranged when required.
Location of Service: Darebin Community Health Occupational Therapy service is located at Level 1, 306-310 Bell Street, Preston.
Hours Of Operation: The service operates on Monday – Wednesday from 9am - 5pm
